A substation for Liberia’s international gateway
The Liberia Electricity Corporation commissioned King Sign & Design to build a new electrical substation near Roberts International Airport at Harbel Town, Margibi County. Work ran from March to December 2023.
We were engaged for the full delivery, not a single trade. That meant working with LEC and its stakeholders on the architectural and engineering plans, sourcing the materials and equipment, managing every phase of construction on site, and running quality control through to handover.
RIA is Liberia’s primary international gateway, and the substation was part of wider efforts to modernise the airport and stabilise power across the surrounding area. Air traffic control systems, runway and terminal lighting, and passenger services all depend on the supply it carries — which set the standard the work had to meet.
The substation was completed and handed over in December 2023, and forms part of an ongoing programme of LEC work across multiple sites in Liberia.

Building the substation
Construction ran from March to December 2023 at Harbel Town, from the civil works and foundations through to the completed structure and equipment housing.

Quality control ran through the build and again at handover, with inspections carried out on site alongside the client rather than signed off from an office.

The substation was completed and handed over in December 2023. It now carries the supply that Roberts International Airport and the surrounding communities depend on every day, and gives LEC capacity to support the airport’s continued modernisation.
